Dez Bryant will play his former team for the first time since rejoining the NFL earlier this year.

When asked about playing the Cowboys this week, Bryant had a message for Dallas owner Jerry Jones.

“I’m thankful that (Jerry) drafted me and gave me the opportunity to play for his franchise. I’m a Texas boy, so I grew up a Cowboys fan. I’m thankful for that, but I’m here now. I’m excited to be a Baltimore Raven. I’m looking forward to going up against those guys.”

Bryant and the Cowboys owner have a contentious relationship going back to the day when Jones cut the star wide receiver in 2018.

Dallas drafted Dez Bryant back in 2010. The young receiver soon blossomed into one of the top wideouts in the NFL, making First-Team All-Pro in three of his eight years with the Cowboys. Bryant strung together three seasons of double-digit receiving touchdowns, leading the league with 16 in 2014.

After that though, his numbers started to decline. In 2017, Bryant only reeled in six touchdowns through a full 16-game season. Before the 2018 season began, Jones and the Dallas front office decided it was time to cut their former star to free up cap space.

This decision wasn’t mutual. Bryant famously took to Twitter to let Cowboys fans know that he wanted to stay.

After a long hiatus from the game, Dez Bryant has finally made his return to NFL football.

The receiver signed to the Baltimore Ravens practice squad back in late October. Two weeks ago, Bryant was officially moved up to the Ravens’ 53-man roster. He’s eased his way back into the flow, reeling in four catches for 28 yards through three games played.

Coming off a tough divisional loss to the Steelers on Wednesday, the Ravens look to bounce back against the Cowboys on Tuesday. Lamar Jackson and others are expected to be cleared from the COVID-19 list following the outbreak in the franchise last week.

Wide receiver Dez Bryant has been in the lab this summer, working diligently to make his way back from an ill-timed Achilles injury in 2018. After his early-offseason release from the Dallas Cowboys, Bryant reportedly turned down multiple contract offers, only to end up unemployed all the way into November before catching on with the New Orleans Saints.

Unfortunately for Bryant, the Saints and anyone generally cheering for the man who meant so much to the Cowboys for so long, he tore his Achilles at the end of his second practice with the Saints, effectively ending his season before it started. Bryant still currently holds a special place in the hearts of many Cowboys fans, who wonder if and when he’ll find a home for 2019.

At the time of his injury Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network was quick to report that the “Saints (were) open to bringing back Dez Bryant for 2019.” That has not come to fruition, but Josina Anserson reported in early June that “a few NFL teams have been reaching out inquiring (about) his progress.” Saints Wire dropped their thoughts on a Bryant return last month.

With the Saints relying on so many receivers with few hides on the wall (including Tre’Quan Smith, Keith Kirkwood and Austin Carr) or those returning from stints on the injured reserve list (Ted Ginn Jr. and Cameron Meredith), there could very well be room for Bryant in New Orleans if he and the Saints can reach an agreement. Of course, the Saints would have to have interest in his services after his disappointing injury.

With a potential Saints reunion a real possibility, and multiple teams known to have checked in on Bryant’s progress, here are five teams most likely to secure Bryant’s services in 2019.

This list starts where Bryant’s 2018 season stopped, in the Big Easy. While he was picking and choosing who to sign with it was widely reported that Bryant wanted a shot at playing the Cowboys, and signing back with the Saints would give him that opportunity in 2019, when the Cowboys travel to New Orleans for a Week 4 Sunday Night Football matchup. When asked what drew him to the Saint last year, Bryant said, “For one, who wouldn’t want to play with Drew Brees?” If Bryant wants to lock in with an all time great QB on a Super Bowl Contender, New Orleans is a great start.

The Packers feature all-time great quarterback Aaron Rodgers and also are set at the No.1 receiver spot, with Davante Adams after his 1386 yard, 13 touchdown campaign in 2018. Behind Adams though, it gets murky.

Geronimo Allison and second-year players Marguez Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown will get their shots, but new GM Brian Gutenkunst has not been shy about adding talent when he feels it’s needed, and said point blank after the draft that the wide receiver group wasn’t exempt:

“Obviously (with) Geronimo coming back, he’s kind of a veteran guy stepping into that role, and I do like some of our guys that are kind of competing for some spots there as well. It’s not like we wouldn’t add one if we thought the right guy was there, but I like that group.”

Bill Belichick is sitting on eight Super Bowl rings and counting, 6 as head coach in New England, 2 as defensive coordinator in New York. Like his mentor, Bill Parcells, Belichick buys the groceries he’s going to cook with, acting as both general manager and head coach.

He’s made countless shrewd moves, bringing players in and sending them packing whenever he believes it will help the team win football games, and at this point, who’s going to argue with him? If Belichick thinks Bryant can help, he won’t hesitate to bring him in.

The Patriots’ wide receiver room has always been a revolving door. Currently, the big question is whether or not Josh Gordon will be available at any point in 2019, or ever. The Patriots still retain Gordon’s rights, but if they see his return as improbable, they’ll move on. Bryant would likely be happy to catch balls from the G.O.A.T., Tom Brady. Bonus: Just like with the Saints, the Cowboys will be visiting New England this fall.

Bryant is going to want to go to a contender and Jaguars will have their shot in the wide open AFC South in 2019. William Hill Sports Book in Las Vegas currently has the Jaguars criminally underrated at 50/1 odds. Will Bryant see it like the oddsmakers, or will he see the team that reached the AFC title game just two years ago, with one of the best defenses in the NFL, that just added Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles at quarterback?

The Jaguars are not hurting for wide receiver depth, with Marqise Lee and Dede Westbrook trending upward, but adding a red-zone stud like Bryant might come in handy for a team that finished 31st in Red Zone Efficiency in 2018.
