What Does A 2 Team Teaser Pay
However, if a push occurs on a two-team tease, the overall bet just becomes a push. So, the bettor can’t benefit from only one adjusted spread. At some books, there’s also the possibility of a “sweetheart teaser.” That is either a three-team, 10-point teaser for -110 odds, or a four-team, 13-point teaser for -120.
A $100 teaser in the above 3-team/5-point teaser would pay out $150 in winnings. Sportsbooks can vary on some of this, namely their exact payout schedule and other major concerns like whether a tie results in a push or a loss. Here are the general payouts on basketball teasers: 4-Point Teasers 2-Team: 1-1 3-Team: 9-5 4-Team: 3-1 5-Team: 5-1 6-Team: 7-1. A football teaser is typically available at 6, 6.5 or 7 points. For a basketball teaser, lines are moved 4, 4.5 or 5 points. Payouts from Teaser Bets. A three-team parlay, regardless of side, will pay roughly +600 (6/1) with a winning wager (at -110 odds). A three-team teaser payout, however, is a different story. Teaser bets are governed by the same rules as parlay bets. The only exception is the two team teaser. If one of the games result in a betting tie, there is no action and the wager will be refunded. Basketball rules. For betting purposes a game is official if played within five minutes of completion. With teasers, all teams need to beat the adjusted spread for you to win. A $100 teaser in the above 3-team/5-point teaser would pay out $150 in winnings. Sportsbooks can vary on some of this, namely their exact payout schedule and other major concerns like whether a tie results in a push or a loss.
Most people familiar with betting college basketball don’t think much about teasers. These bets are pretty popular in football, but simply don’t get as much action in basketball.
What is a Teaser Bet in Basketball? Understanding How They Work
For those that don’t know what a teaser is and how it works, here’s a quick explanation. The basic principle of a teaser is moving the line in your favor. The only catch is you have to include 2 or more teams and like a parlay, all the teams must win for you to cash a winning ticket. For example, say Duke was a 10-point favorite in their upcoming game. You like them to
For example, say you liked Duke -7, Michigan -4 and Kentucky -8. You like all three to win but aren’t so confident they will do so by more than the spread. You can include them in 4-point teaser and move the line 4-points in your favor. Using our example, Duke would go from -7 to -3, Michigan would go from -4 to a Pick’em and Kentucky would drop from -8 to -4.
The more teams you include the bigger the payouts, but also the less likely you are to win. You can also tease more than 4-points. However, the more points, the worse the payouts are going to get. As you can see from the chart below, a 2-team 4-point teaser would net you $117 on a $100 wager. If you used the same two teams and did a 10-point teaser, you would have to risk $410 just to win $100.

How to Know When It’s Profitable to Bet College Basketball Teasers
What I wanted to find out was if this was are NCAA basketball teasers profitable. Or, are people just not aware that they can be if you cross enough key numbers.
I went back over more than 8,000 of the most recent NCAA basketball games to find out. We’ve also focused only on games in January and February. This allowed us to zero in on home/away trends. I wanted to get rid of early and late season tournaments. Those don’t typically have a home court advantage.
I’ve broken these teaser results into four separate tables: Home Favorites, Home Underdogs, Road Favorites, and Road Underdogs. Typical basketball teasers are 4, 4.5 or 5 points.
The results below show the winning percentage of games with a closing spread (Line) at each number when teased 4, 4.5 or 5 points. We then compared that number to the winning percentage needed to turn a profit for a two-team teaser. Those are based on the typical available odds at a sportsbook. The break even percentages are listed at the bottom of each table.
You can compare teaser odds at online books here. The numbers below are based on the most common odds available.
I’ve also added separate results for 5Dimes and Bookmaker, which offer much better teaser odds than your typical site. We strongly recommend both if you are looking at getting into teasers. 5Dimes offers the best lines in the business when it comes to typical teasers. But, Bookmaker offers amazing payouts for 5.5, 6 and 6.5 point teasers in basketball.
Home Favorites
We start off by looking at home favorites in college basketball. There really aren’t a lot of good situations for teasing home favorites at the typical odds available for NCAA basketball. Teams favored by 14.5 to 15 points have historically been profitable to tease. But, keep in mind that the sample size on favorites of that many points is much smaller than more common spreads.

Road Favorites
With road favorites we finally see some great situations for teasers. We see this phenomenon in other sports as well and it makes sense when you think about it. It’s not easy for an away team to be favored unless they are clearly the better team. Then you get extra points to play with, giving that team a very good chance of covering.

Road Underdogs
We didn’t expect to see many good situations for visiting underdogs. But, the results tell a different story. Visiting underdogs from 12 to 13 points are your best bet for teasing in most cases. This is likely because once a team is up by double-digits late in the game they tend to play backups or at least slow their pace. This gives the losing team a chance to catch up and cover the spread you teased to.

Conclusions
NCAA basketball offers a ton of great teasing opportunities. It might be better than any other sport. On average, road teams offer the most chances for profitable teases. We believe this to be due to an inflated sense of the benefits from playing at home. Compared to the NBA, home floor is not worth nearly as many points (on average) in college basketball. There are many variables that impact this, but we’ve checked the data for the NBA and college basketball and found it to be true (on average home court is worth about 6 points in the NBA and just 3.6 points in college hoops).
You can use these tables any time you are looking for an extra edge handicapping NCAA basketball games. We wouldn’t recommend using it exclusively or following it blindly. But, we do think it can be a great tool for helping knowing the best situations to tease certain teams.

Teaser Betting Rules
by Trevor Whenham - 12/31/2009
Teasers aren't the first tool that most serious bettors look at to make a profit. In the right situations, though, they can be both profitable and a lot of fun. One reason why bettors don't always embrace them is the confusion over teaser betting rules. The rules are at least a little bit different at each different sportsbook, and those seemingly small differences can make a big impact on the bottom line if you aren't aware of them. Here's a look at the important teaser betting rules that you need to be aware of.
Before we get to the nitty-gritty, we really should look at a definition of teasers. A teaser, like a parlay, is a bet on multiple games - two or more - and you must be correct in all of the games in order to cash your ticket and make a profit. They are most common in football and basketball - the sports most often bet against the spread. What makes teasers special, though, is that you get to adjust the point spread. A typical football teaser, for example, is six points. That means that you get to take six points off the spread of a favorite, and add six points to the spread of an underdog. For example, a -10 favorite would become -4 in a six-point teaser, while a +10 underdog would be +16. Now for those teaser betting rules:
Number of points - The first thing you need to be aware of is the number of points added to each game. The standard is typically six in football and 4.5 in basketball, but those can vary widely. As any sports bettor knows, even just a half point in a spread can make a big difference. You can find football teasers as low as five points and as high as 20, and basketball anywhere between four and 16. You need to know the number of points you have, and make sure that the adjusted spreads are favorable for you.
Payout - The payout in a teaser is fixed - it doesn't change based on the teams involved. Each sportsbook sets their own payouts, though, and they can vary widely. When you are making a teaser bet you need to shop around to find the best price for the number of teams you are betting. Some books generally have better teaser payouts than others, but they won't necessarily have better payouts for all of the possible teams involved. Over the long run a difference in payout can obviously make a big difference to the bottom line, so looking for the best payout is crucial.
Ties - This is the single biggest rule that you need to be aware of - how the book handles ties. There are four different ways that a book can handle it if one of your games ends exactly on the number. Some books treat a tie as a win. Others reduce the number of teams in the teaser by one - if you bet a four-team teaser and have a tie and three wins then it will pay off like a three-game teaser. Others will treat a teaser with a tie as no action - they'll return your bet - as long as you win your other bets. Finally, some books will treat a tie as a loss. Each of those is a very different situation, and can affect your return significantly. You need to be aware of what the book offers, and make sure that it fits your needs. There isn't necessarily one situation that is better than another, but you need to make sure that the potential return adequately reflects the risk you are taking.
Maximums - There are two potential issues you may need to consider here. First, the maximum amount you can bet on a teaser may to too low for you. Many books minimize their risk in teasers by making the maximum bet much lower than it is for a straight bet. Some books also put a maximum on the amount they will pay out for a teaser. That could mean that a large bet on a teaser with several teams involved which should pay out for more than the maximum will return less than the stated odds. Over the long term that's a real problem.
Different online books have different strengths when it comes to teasers. Here's a couple of sportsbooks that do well on many fronts, though:
5Dimes - 5Dimes offers a wide range of teaser options, with football teasers available from everything from five points to 20, and basketball from 4.5 to 16. They also offer two different options for ties - they can either be counted as winners, or the number of teams in the teaser can be reduced by one. The reduce option pays a little better than the win option. 5Dimes also offers prices that are competitive with most books in most situations, and better in many.
Bookmaker - Though Bookmaker offers fewer options than 5Dimes, and is less generous with ties (they treat them as no action if the rest of the bets are a win), their prices are attractive when you are involving more teams.
